چکیده

WEIL'S DISEASE, since its original clinical description by Adolf Weil of Heidelberg in 1886, has been diagnosed clinically in many parts of the world. Inade and Ido in 1914 discovered the pathogenic agent by inoculating the blood from a patient during the first week of the disease into a guinea-pig and found that the organism responsible was a spirochaete. Noguchi, who also studied the organism, described its typical morphology and called it the Leptospira Icterohaemorrhagica. This opened the way to more accurate diagnosis by bacteriological methods and to experimental investigation of this infection.

Weil's disease with elevated plasma D-dimer.

We report a case of Weil's disease manifesting elevation of plasma D-dimer in the acute phase. Later, in the convalescent phase after treatment, the plasma levels of D-dimer returned to normal. Plasma D-dimer can be used as a marker of fibrin formation and degradation. Based on our observations, we conjecture that fibrin formation and fibrinolysis may occur in the acute phase of Weil's disease.

Understanding of Weil's disease among canoeists.

Although the risks of contracting Weil's disease in the UK are small, it can be a serious illness. Recently the disease has attracted public interest. This interest has prompted confusion and anxiety among recreational water user groups such as canoeists who had not previously seen themselves as being particularly at risk. In this paper, the experience of symptoms associated with Weil's disease...

The Prophylaxis of Weil's Disease (spirochætosis Icterohæmorrhagica)

We have already described briefly the portals of entry and of excretion of the pathogenic spirochetes. We may mention here that we have twice prevented epidemics by disinfection of the ground and the removal of the inundated water in certain places in coal mines. In one mine 19 out of 50 workmen, and in another 9 out of 30 workmen came down with Weil's disease in about 2 weeks. We have already ...

Intensive Care of a Weil's Disease With Multiorgan Failure

UNLABELLED Leptospirosis is a commonly encountered type of zoonosis, especially in tropical regions. There is insufficient data regarding its frequency in non-tropical regions such as Turkey. Although leptospirosis presents with a mild icteric form in nearly 90% of cases, it can lead to Weils disease characterized by fever as well as fulminant hepatorenal and respiratory failure, in approximate...

The Rat as a Carrier of Spirochæta Icterohæmorrhagiæ, the Causative Agent of Weil's Disease (spirochætosis Icterohæmorrhagica)

1. On the basis of these findings, we conclude that the extermination of rats and field mice is a highly important prophylactic measure against Weil's disease. 2. The chemical composition of soil and water plays animportant part in the development of Spirochoeta icterohoemorrhagioe, and consequently in the spread of the disease of which it is the causative agent.
